What is a zip file

What is ZIP Easily explained

If you receive a ZIP file, there is little you can do with it. We'll show you what it actually is and how you can use ZIP files yourself.

What can ZIP files do?

ZIP is a special file format for compressed data. ZIP files have the ending ".zip", text files, for example, have the file ending ".txt".

  • A ZIP file has two major advantages: ZIP files serve as a container and can therefore combine numerous other files and folders in one file. For example, you can pack and send multiple documents, images and folders in just one file.
  • On the other hand, the data is significantly reduced in size by packing it in a ZIP file. Depending on the size of the file, several percent of the original file size can be saved. A 4.5 GB film in a ZIP file can easily be converted into a 4 GB film.
  • With programs like 7-Zip or WinZip you can open, create and edit your own ZIP files. However, you do not need any additional software to open a ZIP file. Windows can open and extract ZIP files out of the box.

In the next practical tip, we will show you how to unpack ZIP files online. This will minimize the possible risks if you receive a ZIP file from an unknown source.
