How do I lay an artificial turf

They can hardly be distinguished from real lawns with the eye. But even if you don't have a garden, you don't have to do without a green lawn. Laying artificial turf on a balcony or terrace is quick and easy!

Artificial turf for patios and balconies

To equip a terrace or balcony with a decorative lawn, artificial turf is the only alternative. It can be laid permanently on all smooth surfaces without any problems. A built-in drainage system allows the moisture to flow away so that no waterlogging occurs when it rains. The lawn can be left on the balcony or terrace in summer and winter, frost temperatures do not affect it. The lawn creates a pleasant surface on which you can walk comfortably barefoot and which gives the balcony or terrace a homely appearance. Due to the modern types of artificial turf, the lawn can hardly be visually differentiated from natural lawns.

The preparation of the subsoil

It is important to have a smooth surface on which the lawn is to be laid. Terrace or balcony are completely cleared and the floor smoothed. Unevenness must be removed, otherwise the artificial turf will tear or dangerous tripping hazards arise. It doesn't matter whether the floor is made of concrete, tiles or stones. Thanks to the good drainage properties of modern types of artificial turf, almost any surface can be provided with a green lawn. Further preparatory work on the terrace or balcony is not necessary. Only the measurement has to be done. A tape measure is used to determine the length and width of the balcony or terrace so that you know how much lawn you need.

The following things are required to lay artificial turf:
  • sufficient amount of artificial grass
  • Yardstick
  • sharp knife or box cutter
  • Artificial turf glue
  • if necessary, fastening anchors

Choosing the right artificial turf

Artificial turf is available in many different versions in hardware stores, gardening shops or on the Internet. It is offered in rolls in different widths. The rolls should not be too wide for smaller areas. Since the types of artificial turf differ in color, it is best to buy the turf you want on site. Then it is easier to choose the right color. Inexpensive offers are already available for 15 euros per square meter, but artificial turf types are also offered at prices per square meter of 50 euros and more. If you want to enjoy your new lawn for a long time, you should dig a little deeper into your pocket and buy a high-quality lawn carpet with good drainage properties.

Laying the artificial turf

When the selected rolls of lawn have been obtained, the next step is to lay the artificial turf. The floor should be as dry as possible, as laying is then easier by hand and no damp spots can form. At one end of the terrace or balcony, start rolling out the lawn in individual strips. At the end of each lane, the roll is cut to the appropriate length with a sharp knife. The lawn can be divided perfectly with a carpet knife. As many strips are laid until the entire area is covered. There must be no gaps between the strips. Otherwise there is a risk of getting caught in it and falling while running. The seams may also curl and create tripping hazards on the floor. Therefore, press the seams very firmly together.

Fix the seams with glue

If the surface is completely laid out, the artificial turf adhesive is used. The edges of the artificial turf are glued together. As a result, they cannot slip, but form a tight surface without any tripping hazards. Finally, the lawn is attached to the ground with special anchors so that it does not slip when walking or playing. In order for the stalks to straighten up, the lawn carpet can be swept away with a stiff broom. As soon as the glue has dried, which usually does not take longer than an hour, the garden furniture can be put away again. Since the lawn carpet can be cut into shape very well, round or curved surfaces can also be covered with the artificial lawn.

The following work steps are necessary for a professional installation of the artificial turf:
  • Empty the balcony or terrace
  • Smooth and dry the floor
  • Roll out the artificial turf and cut it to the desired length
  • Fix the seams with artificial turf glue
  • Sweep the surface
  • Attach fastening anchors if necessary

Maintenance of the artificial turf

The lawn on the balcony needs little maintenance. Unlike real grass, the area neither needs to be mowed nor cleared of weeds. Pouring is also not necessary. Regular cleaning with a vacuum cleaner keeps the lawn looking beautiful. You can remove coarse dirt with a broom or a leaf rake. Leftovers from the dog can be removed with lukewarm water and a brush. From time to time you should check whether waterlogging has formed under the lawn. Otherwise, especially if the balcony or terrace is on the weather side, there is a risk that the moisture will cause mold to form, which can damage not only the lawn carpet, but also the subsurface. With the right care, you can enjoy the lawn on your balcony or terrace for up to 15 years.

Create a homely atmosphere with the lawn carpet

Artificial turf on the balcony or terrace is a great way to decorate the outdoor spaces of your home. By choosing a high-quality artificial turf, you create a homely atmosphere that invites you to linger outdoors. Thanks to its easy-care properties, the lawn carpet is ideal for laying on smooth floors.
  • Compared to natural turf, artificial turf has the advantage that it requires little maintenance. In addition, it is more resilient and less sensitive to bad weather.
  • Artificial turf is mainly produced using the so-called tufting process. The yarns used for this consist of polypropylene, polyethylene or polyamide. The so-called tuft backing created by the yarns is coated with latex and additionally stabilized.
  • Artificial turf offers greater walking comfort and is more durable than natural turf. Artificial turf can also be used to level out uneven surfaces, for example joints.
  • However, there are different types of artificial turf which, depending on the intended use, have a similar appearance, but a different fiber structure or fiber density or pile height. Therefore, the lawn should always be tailored to the respective use.
Laying artificial turf is easy. The individual strips are laid next to each other for laying. The lengths are adjusted by hand at the seams and the seams are fixed with artificial turf glue. When the artificial turf is glued and hardened, it is usually filled with quartz sand and rubber granulate. The filling level should be checked again and again.

Artificial turf is available in hardware stores in different widths or by the meter. Artificial turf is not only available in green, but also in other colors, for example gray or blue. The costs for artificial turf are relatively high compared to natural turf, but the maintenance costs are low, since in contrast to natural turf there is no need to water the lawn at all, as well as mowing, weeding and fertilizing.
