What are Donald Trump's views on education

Trump vs. Biden

Applying for a second term: Donald Trump

Donald John Trump is the offspring of a wealthy family of entrepreneurs. He was born in 1946 in Queens, New York and is now 74 years old. His father made a fortune in real estate. The current president was decisively influenced by this father, so it is not surprising that Donald Trump started working for the company at an early age and was even represented on the board in his mid-twenties. In politics he wasn't really active in his early years. He first registered himself as a Democrat and later as a Republican. Trump first became known to the general public when he began building his “Trump Tower”, a high-rise building in New York. He appeared on the covers of various magazines and in 1987 his ghost-written book "The Art of the Deal" became a bestseller. The name "Trump" developed into a brand that was used to advertise a wide variety of products.

A difficult time began for Trump in the 1990s, as his then newly opened casinos were not profitable. He ran into financial trouble but was able to avert bankruptcy by convincing creditors that his bankruptcy would cost them more than it would benefit. During this time, the Trump brand continued to suffer through various other scandals and entrepreneurial missteps.

After the difficult nineties for him, he found a way to improve his reputation in the early 2000s. In the television show "The Apprentice" he was hired as a showmaster. The show was so successful that he was soon able to appear again on talk shows, in which he increasingly talked about political issues. "The Apprentice" helped Trump to polish up his image of the very successful businessman. This has long since ceased to be the reality, but it was essential for gaining the presidency. Experts agree that without this reality show, Trump would never have become president.

When he finally became president in 2015, it came as a big surprise to many, as no one has ever become an American president who, like Trump, had neither political nor military experience. This was possible because he was able to spread his simple messages mainly through social media. As after his election, the massive influence of Cambridge Analytica during the election campaign, a company dedicated to influencing people via social media, became known.

His presidency is very controversial and he caused a sensation with much discussed decisions, such as the building of a wall on the border with Mexico. American society is probably more divided than ever under his aegis. On the one hand, there are many, mostly rural and Midwestern people, who support his politics. But especially in the big cities, many Americans reject him because of his backward-looking policies. His politics are characterized by great populism, which has become particularly evident in the establishment of terms such as “fake news” or “alternative facts”. In terms of foreign policy, he advocates a very protectionist policy, which, for example, resulted in a trade war with China. The relationship between the USA and the EU, and particularly with Germany, has also deteriorated significantly under his presidency.

In general, one can summarize that Trump's politics work through division and confrontation. Using simple messages and apparently simple solutions, such as building a wall to reduce immigration, he manages to win over a not small part of the American population.

The challenger: Joe Biden

Joseph Robinette "Joe" Biden was born in 1942 and, at almost 78 years of age, is one of the senior presidential candidates in US history. Coming from a humble background, Biden grew up in Delaware. From 1969 he worked as a lawyer. A major setback in his life was certainly the accidental death of his first wife and daughter in December 1972 and the death of his eldest son from a brain tumor in 2015.

He became politically active for the first time in the 1970s when he entered the US Senate for Delaware. There he remained a member until 2009 and played a key role in shaping US politics. At 29, he was one of the youngest US Senators ever to become a member of this body.

Biden has already gained a lot of campaign experience with two presidential candidacies in 1988 and 2008. Both times, however, he retired from the race relatively early. In 2008 he gave up his candidacy in favor of Barack Obama and subsequently became his vice-president.

Politically, he stands for a continuation of the Obama policy, that is, he is in favor of the “Obamacare” health care reform and for a renewed rapprochement with the West. He also stands for a course against racism, for environmental protection and a more consistent corona policy.

The election campaign is very much focused on the two people Trump and Biden, the party programs of the two hardly seem to play a role. Joe Biden seems to get much of his popularity from the fact that he's not Trump, among other things, as the past four years seem to have left their mark on many non-die-hard Trump voters. This can be seen, for example, in the fact that Biden wears a mask on every public occasion, in contrast to Trump. He also scores with his, in comparison to Trump, factual manner. He does without "fake news". He particularly addresses the Americans who want to calm down after the last four years full of scandals.

How will the election turn out?

Even if Trump has been lagging a bit lately and Biden seems to be slightly ahead in the polls and election forecasts, the outcome of the election is unpredictable. The division in society is so deep that, like four years ago, there will be a head-to-head race between the two candidates.
