Can Arsenal win the league

England Premier League News

National soccer goalkeeper Bernd Leno sees the Europa League as the last ray of hope of a so far disappointing season with Arsenal.

"Our focus now simply has to be on the Europa League. And if we have a successful end, then the season will be saved," said the 29-year-old in an interview with "RTL" and "ntv" before the semi-final second leg against Villarreal ".

Arsenal had lost the first leg in Spain with 1: 2, now it is on Thursday (9:00 p.m. / Nitro) to move into the final. "We need two completely clean games in the Europa League to win the title," said Leno: "Then you just play the Champions League next year and then the fun starts all over again."

Manchester United would probably wait in the final in Gdansk, the English record champions are clear favorites against AS Roma after 6-2 in the first leg. Should Leno miss the title with Arsenal, however, the Gunners will likely have a season without international business. In the Premier League, the Londoners are currently only ninth.

"Of course we also know that if it doesn't work out, the next season could be uncomfortable without the European Cup. And that is of course not what Arsenal FC claim," said the ex-Leverkusen man. In the current season, Arsenal have mainly lacked consistency. "Neither in Europe nor in the league, we have always played consistently well, over several weeks or even over 90 minutes. The Premier League is more or less almost over for us," said Leno.

Success in the Europa League would also see Leno as a recommendation for a place in the EM squad. "I don't think there is a better cover letter for me at the moment and I hope that we will then make it to the final and then hopefully a place will be available for me in the national team," he said.
