What speed is the fastest
Official: SSC Tuatara is the fastest production car in the world at 533 km / h
On September 13, 2007, the SSC Ultimate Aero was crowned the fastest production vehicle in the world with an average speed of 412.22 km / h (256.14 mph) in the two attempts in opposite directions.
The title for the fastest car in the world changed hands a number of times over the following 13 years, with the current official record holder being the Koenigsegg Agera RS with a speed of 277.87 mph (447.19 km / h).
There has been a lot of discussion about whether the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ should be included in this top-speed duel, but the consensus is that the Molsheim hypercar does not meet the criteria. Although it reached 304.77 mph (490.48 km / h), the attempt was only made in one direction and not in opposite directions. There was no return trip, one explanation was: Too much "grain" on the tires.
"Our calculations showed that we would have been around 25 km / h faster in Nevada," said Stefan Ellrott, Bugatti's Chief Development Officer at the time. Nevertheless, Bugatti decided against it. "Safety comes first at Bugatti. The route in Nevada is very long and only goes in one direction, security forces would have taken too long to get to the scene in an emergency. The route also has a slight gradient of around three percent. It would not have felt right to set a record here. "
But right there in Nevada, a new vehicle has now snatched the throne of the world's fastest production car: the SSC Tuatara. On the same stretch of State Route 160 outside Las Vegas near Pahrump, where the Agera RS made history in November 2017, the reptile-named hypercar broke the world record for the fastest street-legal production car.
On October 10, SSC North America put professional racing driver Oliver Webb behind the wheel of the Ultimate Aero successor to dethrone the Agera RS and the Chiron Super Sport 300+.
With a production car running on road tires rather than racing fuel, the SSC scored after two opposing trips, one at 301.07 mph (484.53 km / h) and the other at 331.15 mph (532.93 km / h), a staggering average of 508.73 km / h (316.11 mph). Still not impressed? Well, Oliver Webb said the car "still pulled well" and "didn't finish," adding that it could have gone even faster without the crosswind.
The tuatara also managed to improve additional speed records previously held by the aforementioned Agera RS. SSC is proud to set a new record for the fastest flying mile on a public road at 503.92 km / h (313.12 mph) and the fastest flying mile on a public road at 517.16 km / h (321.35 mph) mph).
It goes without saying that the aforementioned absolute top speed of 532.93 km / h (331.15 mph) was enough to claim the title for the highest speed achieved on a public road. Oliver Webb said the hypercar gained nearly 20 mph (32 km / h) in the last five seconds, suggesting there was room for more.
SSC North America organized the record breaking test according to the regulations, using a certified GPS measuring device and having two world record witnesses on site to check it out. The gauge used an average of about 15 satellites to pinpoint the tuatara's impressive acceleration and speed during the two runs, which took place within an hour.
For a quick refresher: the Tuatara is powered by a 5.9-liter V8 flat-plane biturbo that produces 1,750 horsepower when fed with E85. If you switch to 91 octane, it still generates a whopping 1,350 horsepower in a mid-engined hypercar with a dry weight of 1,247 kilograms (2,750 pounds) and a drag coefficient of 0.279.
Production is capped at 100 cars and customer deliveries are ongoing, with prices starting at $ 1,625,000 and up to $ 1.9 million for the full version with the High Downforce Track Pack.
After Bugatti officially withdrew from the hunt for speed records, only Hennessey with his Venom F5 and Koenigsegg with the Jesko Absolut remain to beat the SSC Tuatara.
