What will happen to van der Vaart?

Real Madrid paid € 16 million to Hamburger SV for Rafael van der Vaart in the summer. The Dutchman should give the team a new look. But the midfielder sits more on the bench than on the field.

(from) Madrid. Rafael van der Vaart had imagined his move from Hamburger SV to Real Madrid very differently. He wanted to have a regular place, to win titles - far from it so far. Real Madrid disappointed more than they convinced this season and despite some injury concerns at Real, van der Vaart is only on the bench. The Dutchman appeared in 14 of 15 league games, but the 25-year-old only played through once. And that was more than two months ago: On September 24th against Gijon, where he scored three of his four goals this season in a 7-1 win, the midfielder played over 90 minutes.

Van der Vaart is disappointed

Most of all, van der Vaart hurts the fact that he was once again only on the bench in “El Clasico” last Saturday against arch rivals FC Barcelona. Only 13 minutes before the end, when the score was 0-0, he was substituted on. And that although his Dutch midfield colleague Wesley Sneijder had to go out injured in the 36th minute. For him, 21-year-old Miquel Palanca came into play. The big shame: It was the first season for Palanca and that in the important game against Barcelona. “Of course it's very disappointing when you only play a few minutes in your first Clasico. But I won't give up, I'll keep fighting, ”said van der Vaart in the picture.

Chances are slim

But will that still be of any use? Real Madrid want to strengthen themselves further in the winter, among other things with another midfielder. Candidates include Ashley Young from Aston Villa, Amantino Mancini from Inter Milan and Lassana Diarra from Portsmouth FC (Goal.com reported). Van der Vaart's chances of gaining a foothold in Madrid are not necessarily greater with another competitor in midfield.

Your opinion: what should van der Vaart do? Should he leave Real Madrid this winter?
