Free association and evenly floating attention

"Less helps more" is the principle of the psychoanalytic method. It recommends renunciation: the patient freely associates without a selection of what has been said with regard to logical, aesthetic or moral norms. The therapist dispenses with theory-based hypothesis testing, wanting to help and having to understand, with constant attention. This establishes a form of therapeutic communication, the aim of which is to allow the unconscious to act. Starting with Freud, Kai Rugenstein asks about the origin and future of this method. He examines their application in practice, their theoretical foundation, their interdisciplinary reference and their learnability. It becomes clear how the method of psychoanalysis is constantly threatened with falling victim to the results achieved with it.
