Make scabs over large wounds
Abrasions - formation and treatment
What are abrasions?
Abrasions are superficial injuries to the skin. If only thetop layer of skin (epidermis) injured, the wound does not bleed because there are no blood vessels. If, on the other hand, there is bleeding, that toodermis lying under the epidermis injured and more widespread infection can result. For this reason, abrasions should always be treated.
The type of wound "abrasion" is characterized by its irregular edges - the skin was literally abraded from the affected area. Usually they are also accompanied by pain due to the destruction or irritation of nerve cells and can under certain circumstances ooze. As they heal, they are covered with scabs (a hard crust on top of the wound).
The positive news: At first glance, abrasions often look more dramatic than they actually are. They usually heal quickly and usually don't leave any scars.
How do abrasions occur?
A fall on a bike or from a climbing frame, a scramble in the schoolyard - above allChildren and adolescents drag onPlaying and romping outdoors quickly abrasions too. These occur when the skin rubs against a rough surface such as asphalt, wood or concrete. This often happens as a result of a fall. The following parts of the body in particular are often affected:
- Hands, especially wrists
- Elbows and forearms
Why is that? It's simple: when we fall, we try to catch ourselves on the hard surface - and scratch the solid ground with our knees or forearms. On the other hand, if you fall in the house, it happens comparatively more oftenLacerations than abrasions, as the floors and walls in the apartments usually have a smooth surface structure. Adults can also get a graze during outdoor activities such as exercising or gardening.
Ointment and Co .: This is how you treat abrasions
Although an abrasion is not a serious injury, it should be treated. Cleaning the affected area is particularly important in wound careno germs and foreign bodies get into the body. If the wound is heavily soiled, you should rinse it thoroughly with running lukewarm or cold water before disinfecting. Then clean the wound with a wound disinfectant.
If there are large splinters or stones in the injury, it is advisable to have them pulled out by a doctor. You can carefully remove smaller foreign bodies yourself with tweezers. Once the abrasion has been cleaned and disinfected, it is covered with a breathable plaster or wound dressing to protect it.
If your child sustained an abrasion in a fall, it is important to be very empathetic and, above all, to remain calm. This is because the injury may cause pain and your child was very frightened at the moment of the fall. Explain exactly how you will treat the wound and that the pain will soon pass.
