The ONGC was founded under the visionary leadership of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Pandit Nehru gave faith in Shri Keshav Dev Malviya and he laid the foundation stone of the ONGC in 1955 in the form of an oil and gas department under the geological supervision of India. After just a few months, the company was transformed into an Oil and Gas Directorate. The directorate was converted into a commission, and on August 14, 1956, an Oil and Gas Commission emerged from the ONGC.

At the ONGC in 1959, Pandit JawaharLal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister to Lord Mountbatten said:

“India not only had its own machinery for oil exploration and production. An efficient oil commission had been set up and a large number of young, smart men and women had been trained to do a good job ”

Since its inception, ONGC as a company has been instrumental in transforming the country's limited upstream sector into a large, viable playing field, with its activities spreading across India and, to a significant extent, overseas. Inland, the ONGC not only found new resources in Assam, but also established a new oil province in the Cambay Basin (Gujarat) and added new oil producing areas in the Assam-Arakan Folded Belt and in the basins on the east coast (both inland and off the coast).

Liberal economic policy

The liberalized economic policy adopted by the Indian government in July 1991 aimed at deregulating and de-licensing the core sectors (including the oil sector) with partial disinvestment of state capital in public sector companies and other measures. As a result, ONGC was reorganized into a limited liability company in February 1994 under the 1956 Companies Act.

In 1994 the Oil and Gas Commission was converted into a corporation and in 1997 it was recognized as a corporation by the Government of India. The group was then awarded Maharatna status in 2010.

In the 1960 years of its long journey, the ONGC laid many milestones in order to achieve India's energy policy goals. The ONGC's journey during these years was more of a story of conviction, courage and commitment. The outstanding efforts of the ONGC have resulted in former border areas being transformed into new hydrocarbon provinces. From a humble beginning, ONGC has grown into one of the largest oil and gas companies in the world in terms of reserves and production.

The technology

ONGC is one of the largest gas and oil companies in India. This has internal service capacities in all areas of exploration and production of oil and gas and the associated services in the oil fields. Over the years cutting-edge technologies have been introduced and absorbed, such as depth domain processing, stratigraphic inversion, advanced volume-based interpretation tools, stochastic lithofacies modeling using neural networks, spectral decomposition, geostatistical modeling, etc.

“Excellence by leveraging competitive advantage and technology with the people involved” - That is the ONGC's true mission!

The ONGC Institute Committee

During the tenure of India's Prime Minister Maharatna, ONGC pioneered the country's research and technological development, establishing twelve world-class institutes under the aegis of the “Committee of ONGC Institutes” or “COIN”. These twelve institutes have become the strong backbone of the Indian hydrocarbon industry, supporting the full spectrum of oil and gas production, which begins at the wellbore and ends at the consumer point.

The ONGC has set standards for the industry, which the entire industry is now following. ONGC set up the so-called "EPINET", which was used to develop a live oil and gas information network and a virtual database for modeling various basins and oil systems. "SCADA" is used by many companies and many benefit from it. These are all those responsible for production and drilling who have to collect online SCADA data at the various levels that contribute to improved operational efficiency and productivity.

3-D centers of virtual reality

The ONGC has set up four 3D virtual reality centers, also known as ‘Third Eye’, which enable the dissemination and information of onshore and offshore applications in real time. These centers are used for exploration and production activities including real-time monitoring of producing oil and gas fields and thus help ONGC to network all of its centers through parallel computer technologies for all major projects.

The SAP implementation by the ONGC management

Looking ahead, the ONGC's management began the SAP implementation in 2002, which turned out to be the largest India has ever seen. ONGC is now moving towards a paperless office using the latest breakthrough technologies.

ONGC began to realign its diverse business activities through the powerful medium of information technology. The IT mission was also reorganized to develop an integrated, flexible and standardized information technology architecture that positions ONGC as a fundamental competitive advantage. The existing independent applications (UFSO - for financial management, SHRAMIK for personnel management, IMMS for material management, etc.) and other old information systems were merged under a common ERP platform. This is how the ICE (Information Consolidation for Efficiency) project emerged from the strategic vision of the ONGC board, in particular Mr. Subir Raha, the then C&MD with the motto “One Organization, One Data and One Information”, in German , Data and information).

The ICE project

ONGC has also launched a company-wide ERP implementation called Project ICE. It comprised 23 SAP modules and more than 500 locations across the country. Ranging from mobile surveying units in Jwalamukhi in Himachal Pradesh to deep-sea vessels in the Bay of Bengal and production facilities in distant areas of Assam to oil rigs in the desert of Rajasthan.

The Visa India

Over the years the ONGC has developed considerable deep water drilling capability. Since 2004 ONGC has drilled over 100 deep water wells. A large number of these wells are located at enormous water depths beyond 5000 feet in environmentally and logistically difficult areas on India's east and west coast, from Gujarat off the coast to Mahanadi off the coast, including 6 wells in Andaman off the coast. Of these, approximately 25 holes were drilled in water depths from 5,000 feet to 7,500 feet and 16 holes were drilled in water depths from 7,500 feet to 10,000 feet. The current world record well 1-D-1, which is being drilled, is the third well at a water depth of over 10,000 feet.

The Visa India

ONGC has achieved this commendable achievement thanks to sustained efforts over the years to keep up with the latest technology in hydrocarbon exploration and is one of the few companies in the world to have completed a large number of deep water drilling in diverse and challenging areas.

Having put the hard work of deep water behind for the past 15 years, ONGC is now fully focused on meeting every deep water drilling challenge in finding energy security for the nation.

The merger with the "Indian Institutes of Technology"

In early 2015, ONGC signed a memorandum on the merger, which is abbreviated (MoC) and includes seven IITs for developing indigenous technologies to improve the exploration and production of hydrocarbons and alternative energy sources. As part of the MoC, the ONGC R&D institutes and the IITs are to jointly carry out advanced research and development projects for the exploration and production sector (E&P) of the country in general and oilfield-specific activities of the ONGC in particular.
