Why have GPU and RAM prices soared

RTX 3060 currently costs € 700 - watch out, it's nowhere near worth it

With the RTX 3060, the smallest RTX 3000 graphics card from Nvidia has started. But you either hardly get them or only at steep prices. MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann explains why he wouldn't buy the RTX 3060 for such prices.

That's what it's about: Nvidia's newest graphics card was released on February 25, 2021. And the tests for the RTX 3060 confirm that the graphics card has a very good Full HD performance. With some drawbacks, WQHD resolutions (1440p) are even possible. The recommended price from Nvidia is 329 euros / US dollars.

This is the current situation: Our colleagues from GameStar looked at the availability of the RTX 3060 and the results are sobering. The card is either not available or available at high prices. The prices start here from 500 euros and range up to 700 euros.

Basically, the sales prices are above the starting prices of the RTX 3070 (500 euros) and in some cases even above the RRP prices of the RTX 3080 (699 - 729 euros). The comparison lags, however, as the faster graphics cards are currently not available at the RRP and also cost several hundred euros more. Currently you can't get a graphics card at the recommended price and that shouldn't change anytime soon.

Given the current prices, you should simply ask yourself whether you really want to pay the high prices that retailers and scalpers are currently charging buyers.

That's why I would never pay 700 euros for an RTX 3060

Who is the card for? Basically, you should be clear about what you should get for 329 euros / US dollars. Because with the RRP of 329 euros, Nvidia actually wants to convince owners of a GTX 1060 to upgrade. The graphics card is from 2016/2017 and the leap in performance is considerable.

And for the price of 329 euros you also get a really good graphics card with the RTX 3060. But neither dealers nor scalpers give us a chance to buy the graphics card at a reasonably reasonable price.

That's why 700 euros are too much: You paid 300 to 400 euros for graphics cards with a comparable performance last summer. The RTX 3060 offers a little more here, but the price seems inadequate.

Above all, you should note that this is actually a Full HD card with WQHD reserves. To charge more than 500 euros for them seems strange. Because gamers who play in Full HD are hardly willing to spend more than 300 euros on a graphics card. This is definitely too much money for me.

The benchmarks from various independent tests also show that the GeForce RTX 3060 delivers the smallest performance leap in the RTX 3000 series of the new graphics cards.

If you look at the GameStar benchmark, the RTX 3060 is only a few FPS ahead of the RTX 2060 Super. The difference between the RTX 3070 and RTX 2070 Super is significantly greater here (158.8 vs. 128.8 FPS).

According to PC-Welt, the street price for the graphics card is much too high, even when considering the performance, as the name RTX 3060 suggests that you are getting a stripped-down RTX 3060 Ti. However, the benchmark shows that the performance of the RTX 3060 ranks 20 to 30% below the Ti version.

A comprehensive analysis of the differences between the RTX 3060 and RTX 3060 Ti can also be read here on MeinMMO.

Compared to older Nvidia graphics cards, this price insanity becomes even more apparent:

  • The GeForce RTX 2070 cost around 365 euros in the summer of 2020 and offers comparable performance to the RTX 3060 and also has the same ray tracing features
  • The RTX 2070 Super has a little more power and cost around 420 euros in the summer of 2020.

Compared to AMD, the current price doesn't get any better either. Because the RX 5700 (XT) from AMD tends to be faster than the RTX 3060. The RTX 3060 has more and newer functions and above all ray tracing and DLSS. You don't get these functions with the RX 5700 (XT).

Where do the high prices come from? Due to the corona epidemic, there is currently a shortage of semiconductors in the industry. This means that manufacturers can produce fewer graphics cards and consoles.

The few devices available then often buy scalpers, which they resell for twice the price. Meanwhile, retailers are also catching up with prices. In addition, miners are interested in the GPUs, although the RTX 3060 is said to be unsuitable for miners.

YouTuber: RTX 3060 is a really great card, but far too expensive

The YouTuber JayzTwoCents explains how big the problem with the price is in his YouTube video. This is a YouTuber with currently 3.24 million subscribers who looks at hardware and accessories and tests them. JayzTwoCents was also able to test the RTX 3060. We have embedded his video for you here:

This is what the YouTuber means: He explains in his video that for $ 329 the RTX 3060 would be a really great card, especially when you compare it to the RTX 2060.

But he is anything but satisfied with the current situation, because the prices for the graphics card are currently well above the RRP. And that is simply far too high for the performance of this GPU.

In addition, the graphics card's 12 GB video memory is just a marketing gimmick that the graphics card doesn't need at all. Buyers should at least believe that they would get something for their 500 euros. In the video you can find his opinion starting at 10:30 a.m.

You shouldn't buy an RTX 3060 for 700 euros

As long as the prices are beyond the 400 euro mark, the RTX 3060 with its performance is therefore not recommended. Because with the high prices you only support scalpers and traders who benefit from the low availability.

If I have the decision to buy an RTX 3060 for 600 euros today or an RTX 3070 for 550 euros in two years' time or an RTX 4000 graphics card (if it is available in 2022), then I wouldn't think twice.

Because currently you have to expect all halfway new or freshly released graphics cards that you have to pay hefty surcharges. Both traders and scalpers are currently benefiting from the scarcity.

If you are not willing to pay that, then you have to wait, because the rising prices do not stop at old graphics card series. Nvidia's announced mining graphics cards will not lower the price of gaming graphics cards either.

Alternatively, you have to look around the used market. Here you can be lucky and get a good graphics card for reasonably fair prices. However, you have to be prepared to forego the original packaging, accessories and manufacturer's guarantee. Not everyone wants that either:

Your old graphics card may now be worth more than you think

What alternatives are there to the high prices of the RTX 3060?

Do you want to have a new graphics card and can not wait, then you can have a look at the current ready-made PCs.

This is the advantage: The advantage is that computer manufacturers are supplied much better and have a higher priority than people who are only looking for a graphics card. Here the availability and the prices are on average significantly better.

Hardware manufacturers often build graphics cards and other modules into their own complete PCs before additional components go on sale. Because the margins for complete PCs are usually better for manufacturers.

When is it not worth buying? Buying a ready-made PC can be particularly worthwhile if you are currently considering upgrading your PC properly. However, if you have a modern system and only want to upgrade the graphics card, for example, buying a new one is hardly worthwhile.

At least the competitor AMD has now presented its latest graphics card with the RX 6700 XT. But this is not based on the RTX 3060, but on the RTX 3070. How the card performs in the first benchmarks, we will show you in the following article.
