How can an adult increase their IQ
Question: Can you increase your IQ?
Anyone who has an intelligence quotient (IQ) of 85 to 115 is nothing special. You swim with it in the crowd and are considered to be of average talent. In contrast, to belong to the small group of gifted people, there should be 130 - at least. However, only one in 50 people in Germany reaches this level. Do you get your IQ with your genes in the cradle? Or can it be increased through training?
"We are not aware of any reliable scientific statements in this direction," says Matthias Moehl, the chairman of the association for gifted people (cafeteria) in Germany. According to the current state of research, intelligence is a property that is remarkably stable over age. “Overall, the underlying talent cannot be increased. But the brain adapts to tasks, ”says Thomas Eckerle from the Institute for Performance Development (IGL). In this way, pure memory or the ability of taxi drivers to orientate themselves could be increased considerably. "So it takes daily work and tangible benefits to significantly improve a skill area," says Eckerle.
And what about the many “brain jogging” programs that are currently on the market? What do they bring? "Brain-jogging programs are interesting because they all require that you constantly deal with a topic and overcome crises if you cannot spontaneously find a solution," explains Eckerle. In addition, most programs lived from the fact that you don't think straightforward, but find complex solutions. This also promotes creativity and helps to avoid thinking in well-trodden paths. With the help of “brain jogging”, different skills can be trained. However, many experts are skeptical as to whether this also leads to an improvement in the intelligence quotient.
IQ in adolescents is still changing
While the IQ of adults apparently hardly changes in the course of life, the situation is very different for teenagers and children. According to researchers, considerable IQ fluctuations are still possible in these. According to a study, between the ages of twelve and 16, for example, deterioration but also improvements of up to 20 points can occur. The changes in the IQ score go hand in hand with adjustments in the brain structure.
However, why these jumps in IQ occur is unclear, say the scientists. Education may play a role in this. That would mean that intelligence could be “trained” at least in young people.
"We should be careful about writing off supposedly underperformers at an early stage, as their IQ can have improved significantly only a few years later," says Sue Ramsden from University College London, naming an important consequence of these results. In many countries there is a tendency to determine the further educational path of children relatively early - perhaps too early.
Computer games promote intelligence
The finding that computer games can also contribute to an increase in IQ in young people is relatively new. However, this does not work with so-called "shooting games", but only with specially developed programs that encourage logical thinking. The children trained in this way not only did better in intelligence tests. Their performance in school was also significantly better over the long term, researchers report.
It is obvious that a high IQ can have enormous advantages at school or at work. But do “super brains” also have advantages in everyday life? "It has not been said whether people with a high IQ are also’ smarter ’in life. Clever life has a lot to do with experience, ”says Eckerle. Gifted people often did not learn how to use their special talents in a targeted manner. "It is of little use to know exactly how the nail has to get into the wall - and what physically happens when the metal of the nail bores into the stone," says Eckerle, giving an example. You have to be able to hit the nail exactly with the hammer.
