Is Red Dead Redemption 2 repetitive

A Way Out: Lead Developer Criticizes God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2

In an interview, Josef Fares, lead developer of the co-op game A Way Out, commented on God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2. In his opinion, both games would be too long and repetitive.

Don't miss the God of War trailer:

At this year's fair and conference Gamelab in Barcelona, Josef Fares gave his opinion on the candidates for the "Game of the Year" award 2018 in an interview with Venture Beat. In addition to Assassin's Creed - Odyssey, Celeste, Spider-Man and Monster Hunter - World, God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 were of course also nominated. Not Josef Fares' choice, as he asserts in the conversation:

"Like I said before, I play all the games out there. My personal game of the year was actually Spider-Man. That doesn't necessarily mean I didn't like God of War. I think God of War was a great game. But I felt more connected to Spider-Man in some ways.

I think the reason God of War won and not Red Dead is because God of War took some risks that were really cool. Cory and the team have done something amazing [...] ".

According to him, Red Dead Redemption 2 got the short straw compared to God of War because the western epic is too long and repetitive. The lead developer behind the co-op game A Way Out also accuses God of War of the same:

"Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 is a great game in many ways. A little too long if you ask me, a little too repetitive in the mission design. You go out, shoot something, and go back. I think that's one of the Reasons why God of War won.

Again, when it comes to games, I'm very allergic to repetitions in game mechanics. I found that both God of War and Red Dead took a little too long. I needed a shorter experience. I think that's why Spider-Man was able to convince me a little more. Especially with Red Dead I lose interest after a while. It was so long! Who has the time? I don't even have kids - could you play these games? Who ends games like this nowadays? ".

Josef Fares also sees a major problem when video games are no longer played through. In his opinion, the replayability is not as important as the gaming experience:

"We should talk about that too. [...] People say to me, 'Oh man, A Way Out, 50 percent of the players played your game through' - should I be happy about that? Are you absolutely crazy? like making a movie and half the people are leaving the theater! We have a serious problem with people who don't play through our games [...]. If someone talks to me about replayability, I'll be slapping them. [Laughs ] We should focus on one-off experiences first of all. That just upsets me ".

God of War was chosen as the best game of 2018 and has also won two other prizes in "Best Game Direction" and "Best Action-Adventure Game". Red Dead Redemption 2 had to be satisfied with two awards in the following categories: Best Narration and Best Score / Music.
