Wine is good for your health
Around 400 BC In BC Hippocrates began to administer wine as a sleeping and sedative drug. He used the wine as a true panacea and prescribed it from headaches and cardiovascular problems to eye diseases.
The Romans differentiated and served old wines for people with poor appetite, wines that contained many tannins for bleeding and for febrile stomach and intestinal diseases were given heavy red wines.
Wine was also used externally to disinfect open wounds and for poultices and rubs. Even in the Middle Ages, wine was given a high priority in this regard.
So it does not seem surprising that German pharmacies also developed to some extent into drinking rooms. In Germany, wine was even available on prescription until the end of the 19th century.
In consultation with the health insurance physicians, the Heidelberg local fund advocated wine against various diseases.
Antioxidant in red wine
With the Greeks and Romans, it was probably more empirical values that made wine a remedy.
Today there is hardly anything unexplored in grape juice and we know what happens to us when we consume wine in moderation or in bulk. The fact is that alcohol and the phenols it contains can affect our cardiovascular system.
Red wine in particular acts as an antioxidant and can thus counteract circulatory disorders and hardening of the arteries. The consumption of wine also reduces blood clotting and thus the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
Last but not least, the scientists also had to admit that wine contains enough antioxidants to protect against cancer.
Wine is not a panacea and nobody has to become an alcoholic to benefit from these positive properties. The same can be achieved with other foods. In any case, there is nothing wrong with a glass of wine every day.

The wine and its valuable ingredients
What is so valuable in wine? At first glance, the drink with its ingredients looks quite unspectacular.
For the most part, wine is made up of water. One liter contains up to 900 grams of it. In addition, there are up to 100 grams of ethyl alcohol, between 20 and 30 grams of glucose and fructose, organic acids, glycerine, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium and some trace elements. You can do something for your mineral balance with just a glass of wine.
One or two glasses of wine are a dose that should not be exceeded permanently in order to enjoy the health-promoting properties of the wine and not to be confronted with the disadvantages of alcohol consumption.
Phenols as health makers
If one deals with the healing properties of wine, then phenols have a special position.
Phenols are secondary plant substances that occur as acids, resveratrol or catechins. Studies have shown that phenols work against platelet clumping. Whether you can then call it a health-maker is then probably a very subjective decision.
Polyphenols also have an antioxidant effect and prevent the LDL cholesterol in the blood plasma from being oxidized and vascular calcification from occurring.
However, only red wine can perform this function. Phenols cannot work miracles, however, and health behavior, lifestyle and physical and mental condition naturally play a major role in how positive wine consumption ultimately has.
Health risk for wine drinkers
The effect on the heart and circulation has already been described and can be explained by the interaction of phenols and alcohol.
But that's not all. Wine can do even more. Wine drinkers are believed to have a lower risk of developing kidney stones. In return, alcohol causes less uric acid to be excreted.
Gout patients have high levels of uric acid in the blood. In this case, wine consumption should be significantly reduced. Alcohol can cause an increase in estrogen levels.
If the estrogen level is too low in postmenopausal women, there is a risk that the bones will lose stability. There is a threat of osteoporosis. Preferably a glass of wine is served with the meal.
Good thing, because wine stimulates digestion. Even before exams, it cannot be a mistake to have a glass of wine. The vessels expand and the brain is better supplied with oxygen.
The French paradox
It is well known that the French are not loathers of food, they feast hard and do not want to miss their glass of wine.
It seems paradoxical that our neighbors are far less affected by cardiovascular diseases than we Germans. Apparently, the French are not that careful about a healthy lifestyle.
They suffer from diabetes more often and have higher cholesterol levels than we do. Numerous scientific studies have shed light on the French paradox and uncovered some interesting facts.
Instead of butter, the French mostly use olive oil, meat is often replaced by fish.
Vegetables and fruits are by no means exotic, they are served with every meal as a matter of course. The wine should not be missing.
The French are the largest wine producer in the world. 57 million hectoliters of grape juice are produced every year. The wine is drunk in moderation and for enjoyment. To quench their thirst, the French always have a water carafe on the table.
The conscience while drinking wine

How much alcohol is allowed per day now? The guideline values are around 20 grams per day for women and 30 to 40 grams for men. So women can drink a glass of wine a day with a clear conscience.
For men it can be two glasses. Long-term studies have confirmed that the positive effects of wine can only be achieved with moderate consumption.
Let go of too much wine - wine enjoyment and its risks
Less is sometimes more and anyone who believes that the healing effect increases if he only looks carefully into the glass is mistaken.
If the “recommended speed” for wine consumption just described is exceeded permanently, the positive properties are neglected and the alcohol shows its side effects.
The risk of cardiovascular diseases increases, as does the risk of stroke.
The hormonal balance and the nervous system get out of control and the risk of gout increases. So make sure you have a good drop in your glass on a regular basis and practice moderate wine consumption.
Then the grape juice is a pleasure for the palate, body and soul.
