Where can I find website traffic

This is how you can find out how much traffic a particular website has

Anyone who does "anything with online" has probably already found themselves in this situation: You want to know how successful a certain website is and, ideally, how many visitors this page has roughly. Today we will explain to you how you can successfully sniff out some tools, tricks and tricks.

If you want to find out how many visitors a website has, you can use various statistics services. First of all: Reliable, absolute numbers cannot always be determined. However, if you use several tools in a network, compare the data obtained in this way on a particular website and then relate it to the information on the other pages, you get a relatively good picture of the relevance of the respective websites.

Alexa

The US statistics service Alexa aggregates data via browser extensions from a panel with, according to its own information, more than 25,000 users. At first glance, the data are not very informative: a curve graphic does not show the development of the number of visitors, but the “Alexa Traffic Rank” worldwide and in the respective country. Alexa does not list specific visitor numbers in the free version. However, there is a trick to call them up. If you enter a domain in the "science search engine" Wolfram | Alpha, it lists the daily page views and visitor numbers calculated by Alexa on the search results page.

SimilarWeb

The Israeli SimilarGroup operates the statistics service SimilarWeb. This creates projections on the use of websites based on data from several different sources. Compared to Alexa, the free version of SimilarWeb provides significantly more information, such as information on the estimated monthly visits to a website over the past six months. The tool also shows how high the respective share of the site's traffic is that comes about via direct calls, search engines, social media platforms and referral links. SimilarWeb also lists the most important referring sites. The paid Pro version offers a larger range of functions; for example the possibility of comparing several websites with one another and looking at a larger period of time, as well as more depth of detail. For a few months now, SimilarWeb has also been providing usage and download statistics for apps - but has so far been limited to Android apps.

Statistics from SimilarWeb to Bild.de

Our impression is that the numbers provided by SimilarWeb are not always 100 percent correct, but represent the relationships between the traffic volumes of different websites relatively correctly. A side aspect: A few months ago we reported critically about SimilarWeb because the company apparently collected data about browser extensions without informing their users. The company informed us at the time that it required all of its data partners to expressly inform their users that they were collecting their data and transmitting it to a third party. "If they refuse to do that, we will not work with them," says Marketing Director Ariel Rosenstein.

Compete, Quantcast & TrafficEstimate

The free versions of the statistics services Compete, Quantcast and Traffic Estimate have, at least so far, rather exotic status in Germany, as they have so far only offered little data for Germany. However, if you are interested in the US market, it can make sense to include the three services mentioned in the overall assessment.

IVW & Agof

The “Information Community for Determining the Distribution of Advertising Media in Germany” (IVW for short) and the Online Research Working Group (Agof) create and publish current usage statistics for German online offers every month. The IVW shows visits and page views, the Agof (whose ranking "Internet Facts" also evaluates the IVW figures and supplements them with figures from a market research panel) lists the net reach of the offers in unique users.

Excerpt from the most recent Agof ranking

Because both rankings are drawn up by independent bodies, the figures are relatively reliable. However, the statistics only contain websites that have their use evaluated by the IVW. Large US corporations like Google and Facebook, for example, don't do that. Websites from the "adult entertainment industry" are just as rare in the rankings as small niche projects. Nevertheless, the numbers can also be useful for websites that are not listed there - for example, if you compare the IVW numbers with information from other tools, or with the IVW numbers the accuracy of statistics that other tools provide, checks.

Google Trends

Google's statistics service provides information on how often a term or URL is searched for on Google. Of course, this is not synonymous with the overall traffic of a website - especially for websites for which Google is not the main source of traffic, such as Buzzfeed. Nevertheless, a look at Google Trends can be quite interesting. Google does not give any specific figures, but comparing different search terms with one another often gives a very good impression of market development - for example, as part of the research for our article about Lovoo. The tool provides the most reliable information in a self-explanatory manner with unmistakable brand names.

Tools for statistics from social media accounts

Today, Google is no longer the only one, and for many websites also no longer the most important traffic provider. Many publishers are no longer only represented with their own page, but also with profiles on various social media platforms. If you want to know how successful a page is, it makes sense to scan such profiles as well - fan numbers, interactions, video views, etc. There are also numerous statistics services for this: Socialbakers, for example, regularly publishes numbers about the largest and most popular the most interactive German Facebook pages. At Socialblade you can find information about the biggest German Youtubers; In addition, data on the world's largest Instagram and Twitch users. The Topsy tool can be useful for evaluating how often a page is linked on Twitter.
